Digital Transformation or Extinction

My notes from the Opening Keynote at ClickZ Live Chicago 2015

by Victor Lee @vlee, Senior Vice President, Digital Marketing, Hasbro, Incorporated

Why is change so hard? We love normal.

Netflix tried to sell 49% to Blockbuster, but Blockbuster said “no” because they didn’t want change. Now Blockbuster doesn’t exist any more.

We accept average. On average a banner ad click-through rate now is .1% to .2%. We celebrate a .25% click-through rate because it’s above average, but who wants to be average? The majority of the world has accepted the current numbers. It’s safe.

Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid to win. “Because we’ve always done it that way.” The people who have always done it that way, usually aren’t around anymore.

Newspapers, radio and TV have had to change to be relevant.

How Can You Achieve Social Success?

Andrea Fishman from bgt

Lots of different new tools for social/search integration.

  • google+ pages
  • tablets, apps & mobile
  • facebook open graph
  • social gamification

The game is now not just the creation and distribution of content, but optimizing it for the different social distribution channels.

The shift that has occurred is that you now have to think of how the audience will have an impact your content and figuring out ways to encourage interaction and promotion by your users.

You have to be aware of how your content appears on third party distribution channels. You have to figure out the right metrics via web analytics and social monitoring.

Guilty Marketers

Guilty Marketers – Wasted & Wishful Multi-Channel Marketing Spend
Opening Keynote for Search Engine Strategies Conference, Chicago, November 15-17, 2011
By Mikel Chertrudi, SES Advisory Board & Senior Director of Marketing for Adobe

This will be updated and edited at a later date, but I wanted to get my notes online ASAP.

By 2020, there will be 50,000,000 connected devices.

As marketing professionals, what should we be doing better in our profession? We need to change the conversation in marketing.

Changing the Marketing Conversation

“Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” – John Wanamaker (Father of Modern Advertising)

Up to 40% of digital marketing is still wasted. We aren’t investing our marketing dollars in optimal channels, so money is still wasted. We’re leaving money on the table. If you can regain that money, you will succeed in marketing.
