Developing Mobile Apps with The Ionic Framework – Front Porch Front-End Developers Conference, Dallas, TX

October 7, 2014 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Presented by Justin Noel

Everyone wants to create an app. There are lots of platforms and cross-platform development costs a lot of money.

The Downsides of Native

  • Proficiency in each platform required
  • Extensive Development Setup required

Hybrid Apps

  • HTML5 that acts like native
  • Web wrapped in native layer
  • Direct access to native APIs
  • Cordova/Phonegap
  • Familiar web dev environment

Hybrid Apps have a Bad reputation, but they can be beautiful.

ionic is a beautiful, open source framework for developing hybrid mobile apps with HTML5. They have taken the traditional mobile UI and made it available within the framework.

ionic showcase

ionic creator is a WYSIWYG for creating hybrid apps.

There is a lot of setup to develop apps – lots of SDKs and programs to install. ionic has a virtual machine called ionic box with all of the necessary requirements to get started developing.

Open Spaces – Alan Stevens

HTML5TX Open Spaces by Alan Stevens

Open spaces technology allows for the important stuff that goes on at conferences in the hallways. An open space is a place where you can run an impromptu session on any topic. The first step is to propose a topic that you’re passionate about. It doesn’t have to be related to other topics or the conference at all. Announce your topic and your name and put it on the board in one of the areas available. The only other responsibility is to show up. Then you can do whatever you want. Give a lecture or a presentation or a conversation. If no one shows up, that’s okay, too. Just stay there and see what happens. It is an amazing experience.

Demystifying Devices: Understanding the Future of the Web & Apps

Adobe Proto looks cool really awesome! Talking about the Adobe Creative Cloud. The creative cloud is Adobe’s way of syncing all of your Adobe products and apps to all your devices.

  • Since 2009, Mobile Internet Usage has doubled every year
  • iPads and iPhones make up more Web traffic than Macs
  • mobile Internet usage will surpass desktop Internet Usage by 2015

Mobile devices have come a long way since the first mobile phones came out for the masses more than 20 years ago.

Progressive Enhancement (UI) and Responsive Design (layout)

progressive enhancement only gives browsers/devices the features they can use

Media queries – find min/max width, orientation & min/max-resolution to decide what css to load
