Opening Keynote at ClickZ Live Chicago 2015 – Digital Transformation or Extinction

Digital Transformation or Extinction

My notes from the Opening Keynote at ClickZ Live Chicago 2015

by Victor Lee @vlee, Senior Vice President, Digital Marketing, Hasbro, Incorporated

Why is change so hard? We love normal.

Netflix tried to sell 49% to Blockbuster, but Blockbuster said “no” because they didn’t want change. Now Blockbuster doesn’t exist any more.

We accept average. On average a banner ad click-through rate now is .1% to .2%. We celebrate a .25% click-through rate because it’s above average, but who wants to be average? The majority of the world has accepted the current numbers. It’s safe.

Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid to win. “Because we’ve always done it that way.” The people who have always done it that way, usually aren’t around anymore.

Newspapers, radio and TV have had to change to be relevant.

April 15, 2015 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

These are my notes on the presentation by Scott Brinker, Co-Founder, President, CTO, ion interactive at the 2015  Digital Velocity Conference – San Diego, California. I hope I can get a hold of the slides. It was an excellent presentation.

The Marketing Technology Landscape is constantly changing. There are thousands of technology companies available for marketers to use. You can see the system dynamics of 2000+ marketing technology  companies.

Why this explosion?

  • Marketing Segmentation
  • Environmental Factors
  • Easier to Sell Software
  • Financially Attractive Market

Marketers are dealing with a lot more software now.

The Shift from Communications to Experiences

Google - Zero Moment of TruthGoogle’s Zero Moment of Truth examines this shift.

Marketing today isn’t about getting buyers to picture your narrative… It’s about getting them to experience it.

Digital storytelling includes:

  • software bought & built
  • configurations &parameters

Software is how marketing “sees” and “touches” customers in a digital world.

Looking for Instagram or Android fonts or logos and icons in png and vector?

May 25, 2012 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Instagram - 8 (Photo credit: BrentOzar)
Ever since I posted my article on Instagram being available on Android, I’ve noticed traffic coming to my site looking for many different, but related things. All of the searches have to do with Instagram and Android and some combination of logo, icon or font, usually specifying a png or vector logo.

Instagram offers a download package of it’s logo on it’s logo usage page, but doesn’t include a vector version, probably because all of the shading in the logo doesn’t lend itself to a vector version. There is also a list of requirements for developers and other that are going to be using the Instagram name and logo, including usage of the following statement: “This [application/website] uses the Instagram(tm) API and is not endorsed or certified by Instagram or Instagram, Inc. All Instagram(tm) logos and trademarks displayed on this [application/website] are property of Instagram, Inc.”

Be Real and Be Nice in Social Media

March 7, 2012 By Jonathan Jeter 1 Comment

The Jeter FamilyIt’s amazing how some days just have a theme. Today in my daily ritual of browsing my social spaces, the theme of being real, being helpful and being polite when participating in Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. kept coming up over and over again.

First, I read a great article by Jonathan Morrow on Copyblogger, (which creates the Genesis Framework that I use on my blog) called “21 Warning Signs You’re Becoming a Social Media Snob” that gives great insight and a cool self-evaluation tool to see if you have become a “Social Media Snob”. I won’t divulge my score, but I think I’m doing okay, but it’s a good reminder that I can be doing better. My favorite part of the article is the solution, which is to show empathy and caring in your social interactions online.

Pinterest IS Making Money… …Off of YOU!

February 13, 2012 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Pinterest

I’ve been watching Pinterest with fascination because of the massive appeal it has for certain demographics. It’s really clever because it is a graphical bookmarking site billed a social online pinboard that allows you to “organize and share the things you love.” Everyone expects that a popular site like Pinterest should be making money, but noticeably absent from the interface are any advertising blocks or any other promotional spaces.

It makes sense, though considering the findings posted on Digital Trends that Pinterest is converting shared links on the site to affiliate links. This is not surprising, as it seems one of the most logical ways to convert the user-generated content on the site into monetizable traffic. However, the interesting thing is that they don’t disclose anywhere on their site or their blog that they are modifying the links that members are “pinning” to their “boards”. Looking through their terms, copyright notice and privacy policy, the standard items are in place, but nothing about modifying the content uploaded to the site to generate income via affiliate relationships. What I’m curious about is how this fits into the FTC guidelines for disclosing affiliate relationships. Maybe it only applies to bloggers and only applies to those who blog about items provided via affiliate relationships.

Posting From WordPress to Google+

February 7, 2012 By Jonathan Jeter 2 Comments

Google+ WallpaperI’ve been working for the last few weeks to try and figure out an easy way to automatically add posts from my WordPress blog to my Google+ page. Hoping that someone else had already created a plugin, I searched in vain both in the WordPress plugins directory, as well as other WordPress sites and forums. I thought I had finally found a way, however, convoluted to be able to semi-automatically add a blog post to my Google plus page. However, it seems like every time I almost figure it out, there’s still one piece missing.

A cool thing, though, is that if you use the Google+ badge on your site, you can +1 your post (which you should do anyway for all of your posts, right?) which then allows you to share the post on your wall. It’s an extra step, but it makes it easy for you to easily share your latest post on your Google+ page.

The good news is that if you follow the rules, you can pull off all sorts of site architecture pandemonium. They had a scenario where they had to simultaneously change subdomain and 301 redirect 16 million URLs and were able to pull it off successfully.

Google’s algorithm is tweaked almost daily. Once or twice a year the changes are significant and get a name, like “Panda”.

Panda was a zero-sum game. For each site that lost rank and free organic position, another site took its place. The business directory site that is a Didit subsidiary doubled in traffic, then dropped and came back. Be patient and take all also changes with a grain of salt. Changes can occur from day to day.

How Can You Achieve Social Success?

Andrea Fishman from bgt

Lots of different new tools for social/search integration.

  • google+ pages
  • tablets, apps & mobile
  • facebook open graph
  • social gamification

The game is now not just the creation and distribution of content, but optimizing it for the different social distribution channels.

The shift that has occurred is that you now have to think of how the audience will have an impact your content and figuring out ways to encourage interaction and promotion by your users.

You have to be aware of how your content appears on third party distribution channels. You have to figure out the right metrics via web analytics and social monitoring.
