What is future-friendly?

Joe: being future-friendly with the web is supporting mobile, but a better strategy is a content strategy for all devices and where they are used. It’s okay to think of web browsers as end points, but your content should be able to live in all environments.

Desktop. Laptop. Smartphone. Tablet. Phablet. Xbox. PS Vita. Smart TVs.  That’s a lot of places your content can live.  Building specific experiences for each one of these simply doesn’t scale.  Let’s find out why and how to tackle such an enormous problem.

Being “”Future Friendly”” is not necessarily just a visual or interaction design decision, but an architectural decision as well.  Furthermore, being “”Future Friendly”” is not about the web or native:  it’s both and more.

  • iPads and iPhones make up more Web traffic than Macs
  • mobile Internet usage will surpass desktop Internet Usage by 2015

Mobile devices have come a long way since the first mobile phones came out for the masses more than 20 years ago.

Mariott Hotel – connect to wifi via mobile

United airlines email link to 404 page

Coke has fixed the flash problem, but shows the entire site when user is trying to input a code.

You would think by now that we now how to show sites on mobile now, but companies still have issues: verizon wireless, att, apple, air canada

Home usage of PC since 2008 has decreased 20%

November 2010 – visits to web-based email sites decreased 7% and people accessing email on mobile devices increased 36%

Twitter – 40% of all tweets are sent via mobile; 16% of new users start on mobile. Top 2 Twitter mobile clients – twitter.com, m.twitter.com, sms

Facebook – 33% of users use mobile via Facebook mobile website, and clients on phones

Mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access devices worldwide by 2013

Shift from what was the personal computer (PC) to what is the personal computer (smart phone).
