Developing Mobile Apps with The Ionic Framework – Front Porch Front-End Developers Conference, Dallas, TX

October 7, 2014 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Presented by Justin Noel

Everyone wants to create an app. There are lots of platforms and cross-platform development costs a lot of money.

The Downsides of Native

  • Proficiency in each platform required
  • Extensive Development Setup required

Hybrid Apps

  • HTML5 that acts like native
  • Web wrapped in native layer
  • Direct access to native APIs
  • Cordova/Phonegap
  • Familiar web dev environment

Hybrid Apps have a Bad reputation, but they can be beautiful.

ionic is a beautiful, open source framework for developing hybrid mobile apps with HTML5. They have taken the traditional mobile UI and made it available within the framework.

ionic showcase

ionic creator is a WYSIWYG for creating hybrid apps.

There is a lot of setup to develop apps – lots of SDKs and programs to install. ionic has a virtual machine called ionic box with all of the necessary requirements to get started developing.

Closing Panel at HTML5TX Conference

February 2, 2013 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Closing Panel at HTML5TX ConferenceTheme: Where has HTML5 come with the diversity of devices

Panelists: Christopher Schmitt, Ryan Joy, Burke Holland,  Estelle Weyl, Joe McCann, Mike Taylor

What is future-friendly?

Joe: being future-friendly with the web is supporting mobile, but a better strategy is a content strategy for all devices and where they are used. It’s okay to think of web browsers as end points, but your content should be able to live in all environments.

Desktop. Laptop. Smartphone. Tablet. Phablet. Xbox. PS Vita. Smart TVs.  That’s a lot of places your content can live.  Building specific experiences for each one of these simply doesn’t scale.  Let’s find out why and how to tackle such an enormous problem.

Being “”Future Friendly”” is not necessarily just a visual or interaction design decision, but an architectural decision as well.  Furthermore, being “”Future Friendly”” is not about the web or native:  it’s both and more.

Instagram and Android, Together at Last!

April 3, 2012 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Instagram available for Android (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Via an Androinica article, I just found out that Instagram is finally available for the Android OS. So now, finally, all of us Android users can find out what you iPhone users have been raving about for years. I guess because of the history of Instagram-like apps in the Google Play store, the actual Instagram app doesn’t show up in the first two app results when you do a search for Instagram. I gave up browsing through the 494 app results and went back to the original article, which conveniently had a link to download Instagram for Android from the Google Play store.

Having not used Instagram before, I found the installation and setup simple and following iPhone users I know who have Instagram accounts to be an easy process. Having used a couple of Instagram-like apps for Android, my favorites being Camera ZOOM FX and Pixlr-o-matic, I have a suspicion (based on what I’ve read so far) that the camera and filter features aren’t necessarily better than other camera apps, but the Instagram community is what makes the app so successful.

The browser rendering engine does a lot of the heavy work that native developers have to contend with. The web browser is a highly evolved medium for content delivery and rich layout.

Demystifying Devices: Understanding the Future of the Web & Apps

Adobe Proto looks cool really awesome! Talking about the Adobe Creative Cloud. The creative cloud is Adobe’s way of syncing all of your Adobe products and apps to all your devices.

  • Since 2009, Mobile Internet Usage has doubled every year
  • iPads and iPhones make up more Web traffic than Macs
  • mobile Internet usage will surpass desktop Internet Usage by 2015

Mobile devices have come a long way since the first mobile phones came out for the masses more than 20 years ago.

Progressive Enhancement (UI) and Responsive Design (layout)

progressive enhancement only gives browsers/devices the features they can use

Last Day of Android Market 10-Cent Apps

Last Day of Android Market 10 Billion Download 10 Cent Sale

It has been a fun 10-day span of exploring and downloading Android Market apps. Some I had wanted to try and others I had never heard of before. One thing I learned during this week and a half was that I can actually try out apps any time, because the Android Market allows you to get a refund for apps within 15 minutes of ordering them. That’s really handy if you’re wanting to try an app and have the time to try it out.

In this post, I’ll list the apps that are available today and next week I’ll do a recap of the apps that were available during the 10 billion downloads sale and start reviewing the apps I’m using. Today’s apps are as follows:

You can still buy most of the 10 cent apps today, if you use the Amazon App store. The following are the 10 cent apps available in the Amazon App store today:

Today’s 10 cent apps from the Android Market include Tetris! (YES!) …along with these other great apps.

  • Blue Skies Donation Wallpaper by KITTEHFACE SOFTWARE
  • Homerun Battle 3D by COM2US
  • Reckless Getaway by POLARBIT

I’ll be reviewing the different apps I get this week over the next couple of months and let you know which of these apps I start using permanently. Hopefully, I’ll get a tablet some time soon and be able to check out the HD apps, as well.

Android’s 10 Days of 10 Cent Downloads Continues

The Android Market continues its 10-day celebration of reaching 10 billion downloads by offering more premium apps for a mere 10 cents each. Today’s choices include the following:

  • Fruit Ninja by HALFBRICK STUDIOS
  • Berenstain Bears – Bedtime Battle by OCEANHOUSE MEDIA
  • AirSync by doubleTwist by DOUBLETWIST ™
  • Flick Golf! by FULL FAT PRODUCTIONS LTD
  • Star Chart by ESCAPIST GAMES LIMITED
  • Reckless Racing by POLARBIT
  • Christmas HD by DUALBOOT GAMES
  • NFL Rivals by NATURALMOTIONGAMES LTD
  • Beautiful Widgets by LEVELUP STUDIO
  • Read It Later Pro by READ IT LATER

If you have an Android phone or tablet, you should definitely take advantage of this special sale, as these prices are the lowest ever! One thing I found out, though, since I have an older phone with not much memory, is that if you uninstall an app within 15 minutes from the Android Market, the order automatically gets cancelled. So, if you are like me and have to pick and choose which apps you can run, just make sure your app is installed for at least fifteen minutes to take advantage of this great sale!

Android Market Reaches 10,000,000,000 Downloads

December 6, 2011 By Jonathan Jeter Leave a Comment

Android Market
Image via Wikipedia

The Android Market has surpassed 10 billion downloads and to celebrate, they are offering some great premium apps for 10 cents each, but only for 24 hours.

I just downloaded Endomondo Pro and Soundhound Pro for $.10 each. The 10 cent Android apps available as of this writing are the following:

Read the rest of Android Market Reaches 10,000,000,000 Downloads

  • SoundHound
  • Minecraft – Pocket Edition
  • SwiftKey X Keyboard
  • Endomondo Sports Tracker PRO
  • Great Little War Game
  • SketchBook Mobile
  • Fieldrunners HD
  • Color & Draw for kids: phone edition
  • Paper Camera
I have never seen such an array of really good apps offered at such a low price and you won’t find a price this low on iTunes, because apparently the minimum price for an app on iTunes is 99 cents. However, some of the app developers are offering their iPhone apps for $.99 to celebrate the Android market event. Kind of ironic, don’t you think?
